All for One and One for All

All for one and one for all, that’s the old saying from the Three Musketeers. It means we all work together toward our common goals. There are a lot more than three of us, but as we focus in on our common goals we can work toward better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

When I was a kid, like most boys, I was fascinated by ants. I think the reason kids have this fascination is we can watch these little creatures work together and get so much accomplished. They each have their job and they work toward their common goal.

Most boys had a goal to disrupt the ants’ organization. They put sticks in ants path, dump water down The ants holes, maybe an occasional a shovel used to dig into the ants colony. Whatever the destruction, the ants always seem to regroup, rebuild, and focus on their commons goals.

Right now, public employees as a whole, we are more like ants in a rain storm. Scattered with no direction, we all know there is a real problem but we keep trying to fix it on our own. We are just trying to keep our heads above water.

For us to have real success we have to join together, get better organized, and work toward our common goals. We can’t do it alone, and we can’t do it divided. There are real outside forces trying to disrupt our success. We must work together to build and rebuild our colony every time they try to disrupt us. Together we will succeed.
